They’re all good dogs, but they do different jobs and have different rights. Here’s the short version. This is general information, not legal advice.
Therapy dogs
A therapy dog visits other people, with its handler, in places like hospitals, schools and senior communities. Therapy dogs are evaluated and registered by organizations such as Alliance of Therapy Dogs. They go where they’re invited, and they don’t have special public-access rights under the ADA.
Service dogs
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a service animal is a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability. Service dogs may go with their person into most public places. See ADA.gov.
Emotional support animals
An emotional support animal gives comfort to its own owner just by being there. Under the ADA, providing comfort alone does not make an animal a service animal. See ADA.gov.
