West TN Therapy Dogs is a group of volunteers who share their special dogs to bring happiness and comfort to people of all ages, young and old alike.
How WTTD began
WTTD was started by two longtime Memphis volunteers, Jo Anne Fusco and Anne Weiss, who had years of experience in animal-assisted therapy and volunteering in Memphis, and knew what a friendly dog can do for someone having a hard day. {{OWNER: founding year: 2008 per Cassie, about 2013 per a 2016 airport news release on the old site}}
Today our members and their dogs visit hospitals, rehabilitation and hospice programs, schools, libraries, senior communities, college campuses and Memphis International Airport. Every one of us is a volunteer.
What a visit looks like
A handler and their dog arrive, check in, and follow the facility’s rules. People choose whether to say hello. Some want to pet a dog and tell stories about the dog they grew up with; some just want a quiet minute with a calm, friendly face. Children practice reading to a patient listener. Students take a break from exam week.
How our teams are prepared
Each member and their dog are evaluated before they visit. We offer evaluation and registration through Alliance of Therapy Dogs, and we welcome teams registered with other national organizations. {{OWNER: annual requirements for handlers and dogs}}
