Reading dogs

A dog is a wonderful audience for a young reader: patient, friendly and never in a hurry.

Some of our teams visit schools and libraries to join story time or to sit with a child who is practicing reading. Children who find reading aloud stressful often relax with a dog beside them, and a relaxed reader is more willing to keep going.

How a reading visit works

  • A registered team visits on a regular schedule, often weekly.
  • Each child reads to the dog one-on-one or in a small group.
  • The handler helps the child along and keeps things fun.
  • Teachers or librarians choose the readers and the books.
